Jute is a natural, plant based fibre extracted from the bark of the jute plant (genus Corchorus which is related to the hibiscus). The fibres are composed of cellulose and lignin and processed through retting (which is the same process you can use with stinging nettle), then stripped and spun to create strong and coarse threads. It is a sustainable and biodegradable fibre making it a natural, renewable resource with many uses such as sacks, bags, rugs and jute baskets!
